Here’s Bonfire by Childish Gambino and here’s 6 Foot 7 Foot by Lil Wayne. For added measure, here’s the vocal track of Bonfire over 6 Foot 7 Foot (if you’re only going to click on one link, click on this one). Childish Gambino has a very similar flow and delivery to Lil Wayne. That’s not really a bad thing, I’m just pointing out that he’s definitely influenced by him.

Another rapper for people who don’t like rap is Macklemore. Macklemore’s favorite rapper is Lil Wayne. He shouts him out and refers to him as “his favorite” in the song Otherside. I’m not saying you should like Lil Wayne. He has a very polarizing style and I wouldn’t point you in his direction if you were looking to get into rap. All I’m saying is that these rappers are big fans of rappers you don’t like and you should explore the genre with an open mind.

I think people look at hip hop through the wrong lens. It’s like they hear a song on the radio and think, “Why doesn’t this rap sound like I Will Follow You Into The Dark?” Hip hop is a genre that started out as party music. You’re not even supposed to be able to relate to a good portion of it. But if you’re looking for rap with deeper lyrics, then there’s a subgenre called conscious hiphop and it’s pretty big.

I’m just really tired of “rap for people who don’t like rap” because the fans say things that make me really uncomfortable all the time.

If you ever said, “I hate rap. It’s all about fucking bitches and getting drunk in the club”, I am sad. Yes that happens...
